We put great emphasis on the training and development of our people so our new team members immersed themselves into our highly detailed and structured training programme which ensures that regardless of the specific role they have been employed to undertake – they will also learn and develop skills in all areas of our galvanizing production processes.

As training and development of our people is one of the areas which Premier Galvanizing lays great emphasis on, Steve Sylvester (Production Manager) recently completed a four year degree course in Business Management and Logistics at the University of Hull.

The course, alongside his demanding day job proved testing at times on his social life, however Steve really appreciated the knowledge and experience he has gained at Premier Galvanizing in helping him produce some excellent work in each of the modules which included Business law and ethics, finance, logistics, marketing and human resource management.

“The support the company gave me throughout the four years was invaluable. I am delighted that Premier Galvanizing encouraged me to continue my education as a mature student and thus gaining a business management degree. This will prove invaluable throughout my career.”

Here’s to a bright future for Steve and we look forward to a long and prosperous journey through life!

Premier Galvanizing recently held a retirement party for loyal employee John Lyell, who set off to enjoy his retirement at the end of December 2013. John, who has worked for Premier Galvanizing at the Hull factory for 14 years was sad to be leaving stating:

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time working for Premier Galvanizing at both the Hull factory and training new employees at the Corby factory, I have worked alongside some great people, the owners and management team have always treated me fantastically well”.

John will be spending some quality time with his wife Denise, his 3 children and numerous grandchildren.

We wish John a long and happy retirement.

Our approach is very much ‘pro-active’ rather than reactive and we are always available and willing to come out and see customers at any time. What is hot dip galvanizing? 

Hot dip galvanizing is the process of protecting metals from corrosion, the main culprit being iron and steel. To make sense of just how important galvanizing is you have to imagine how often the metals it protects are used in everyday life.

For instance, steel is one of the most common metals used. Believe it or not, it completely surrounds us. Because it is such a strong and versatile metal it is used to manufacture a wide range of product such as structures and it can be used to construct buildings.

Although it is a versatile metal, with many advantages, it has one very distinct weakness which is corrosion.

When most metals are exposed to water or moisture, then rust is inevitable. Rust can seriously damage and weaken the surface of metals, especially steel. For example, if a bridge begins to rust, over time the structure will begin to fail and collapse.

Is zinc really that important?

The process of galvanizing provides outstanding corrosion performance in a wide variety of environments.

Galvanizing provides a durable, abrasion-resistant coating of metallic zinc and zinc-iron alloy layers which are bonded metallurgical to the steel.

Why is zinc used?

Although zinc is a metal it does not rust like iron or steel.

There are many advantages to using zinc. It provides toughness, resistance to mechanical damage and ultimately it slows corrosion and help structures last up to a hundred years.

Zinc is an impressive metal, as is the galvanizing process. Without it, buildings and structures would not be able to hold on as long as they do. One of the most common methods of galvanizing is hot-dip galvanizing.

Hot dip galvanizing – it’s all about the reaction

Hot Dip Galvanizing varies from plant to plant but here at Premier Galvanizing we specialise in this process. The hot dipping method results in the steel being coated with a thick layer of zinc. However, the steel has to pass through a molten bath of zinc, heated to about 450 degrees Celsius. When the steel is immersed in the bath the zinc reacts with the steel,
forming an iron-zinc alloy. The zinc also forms a zinc oxide when it comes into contact with the surface. This is what prevents corrosion.

So, what are the benefits of the hot dip galvanizing process?

There are many advantages to hot dip galvanizing, which is why is it one of the most popular galvanizing processes used.

Here are just a few of the advantages:

• It creates a tough, durable and permanently bonded coating. This is better than many other methods in protecting steel from damage.
• It is very reliable because there is coverage from the inside and out.
• Hot dip galvanized steel provides an easy to clean surface, making it more hygienic.

When left alone, hot dip galvanized steel will last decades. It will protect against the weather and substances such as, diesel oil and petrol.

Galvanizing growth – now that’s what I call TEAMWORK!

Over the past few months we have been very busy on numerous high end hot dip galvanizing projects throughout the country. Two projects in particular were at a crucial stage and simply had to happen with constant overnight turn-around requirements being required.

This has been great from a business perspective but has made us think about the resources we have and how these can be best utilised.

We needed to do this because there was a risk that demand would out strip our ability to supply and this was simply not an option.

Considering we already work 24 hours a day starting at 9pm Sunday and running through until 8pm on a Friday as our basic week we are limited how we can build additional production into our week other than on a weekend.

We have an excellent core of multi-skilled employees who were working additional hours within the basic week, but needed to maximise our production capacity over the weekend periods.

We approached our Corby galvanizing plant to gauge interest in operatives coming to Hull to work over the weekend, working a full day Saturday and Sunday in conjunction with a team of Hull operatives.

Luckily the Corby guys jumped at the chance to come up to Hull.

We have repeated this exercise four times over the last couple of months which has proved to be a complete success and has achieved the following:

1. Given us the additional galvanizing production capacity required
2. Resulted in us fulfilling our commitment to our galvanizing customers by achieving all customer deadlines.
3. Cemented strong working relationships between the two plants
4. Created strong working relationships between the two sets of operatives and strong bonds have been formed.

A welcome to a new addition to the Premier Galvanizing fleet…

With an ever increasing demand on its galvanizing delivery service transport fleet, Premier Galvanizing (Hull), have recently welcomed a new articulated vehicle into its day-to-day operations.

Working closely with their long term partner D&P Haulage, also based in Hull, the new DAF Artic, proudly displaying the Premier brand commenced work in late April. Servicing galvanizing customers from Newark to Newcastle and all those in-between. The new vehicle can carry a staggering 28 tonnes of steel for hot dip galvanizing and the increased ability to transport wide loads on our flat bed trailer it is already proving to be a big hit with our galvanizing and hot dip galvanizing customers throughout the UK.

Already offering a speedy and efficient galvanizing transport service, by adding to our existing vehicles of five 18tn Rigids and one 7.5tn wagon, the new addition ensures that Premier Galvanizing will continue to offer a premier service to all customers, no matter how big or small.

We are very proud of our company image and our new modern fleet of vehicles complimented with well, presented and customer focused drivers highlight this. Our transport fleet consists of six vehicles which is made up of three articulated vehicles, two ten tonne rigid vehicles and one seven and half tonne vehicle.

This gives us the flexibility needed to collect almost any size of fabrication from any company premises large or small. We operate in very large area as far north as Sheffield, Birmingham in the West, Gatwick in the South and Norwich in the East. We are also available to make arrangements to deliver/collect outside our normal operating area should this be required.

The fast, reliable and efficient hot dip galvanizing service that we offer is second to none in the galvanizing industry and we work very hard to ensure that the high level of service that our customers demand is maintained at all times.

Working as a team with our customers Premier Galvanizing have been involved with numerous high profile projects where reliability of service was of the utmost importance and tight deadlines had to be met. The team at remained committed to the cause and ensured that all deadlines were met, which involved;

• Working at break neck speeds to ensure that deliveries were made to complete work for the F1 Grand Prix at Silverstone.
• We made it our goal to ensure that deliveries were made to complete work on the new Wembley Stadium.
• We got on our bikes to ensure that the Velodrome at the London Olympic Stadium was completed on time.
• We jet propelled deliveries of material for work on a terminal at Heathrow Airport.
• We also worked at electrifying pace to meet deliveries to Drax Power Station.

The London 2012 Olympics can rightly claim to be the best games ever.

The London Olympics showcased the incredible talents of our Britsh athletes who had the opportunity to perform in the most fantastic facilites.

At Premier Galvanizing we were very proud to have contributed to these facilities, by providing a hot dip galvanized finish to the internal steelwork within the Velodrome. We also hot dip galvanized the metalwork outside the Velodrome and throughout the Olympic Park.

Our clients were working night and day to build these world class facilities in time for the Games, and we were able to satisfy their tight timescales.
